Gladiator Witch

in

Yeah, I admit it, I like drawing scantily clad women. So sue me.

"Although little is known of the sect of witches and warlocks known as the Shedren, there was a somewhat famous member from the early to mid eighteen hundreds known only as Lilit or Lilith, although most references call her Lilit The Reaper.

After the Dust Fae Hordes drove the Imperialists, Arabs, and assorted disorganized negro tribesmen from North Africa in 1826, the entire region became a wild and barbaric place, even worse than the reputation given to the American south west. The Goblin and Orc warlords organized gladiatorial matches that briefly rivaled those of the ancient Romans in order to keep their savage clans from revolting or dispersing after their victory.

Only the strongest humans were allowed or could even survive in such an inhospitable culture, but some were able to thrive and a slow integration of the Moorish complected humans began. It was at the height of the integration and gladiatorial spectacles that Lilit appeared.

It is a testament to her prowess and powers that a woman of clearly European ancestry was so feared and respected by such a primitive, warlike culture.

She fought in the arenas for nearly five years, and was never once defeated. No one could predict where she would appear, or when, but it was soon common knowledge that when she did arrive, always unannounced, she would be given the privilege to fight the strongest available competitor or the organizers and guards would face her reputedly cold and murderous wrath.

She favored battling monstrous, beastly foes, very often imports from the deepest parts of Africa or sometimes Russia or Asia. Oni, Trolls, Ogres, and any other Fell beast that was shipped in was fair game.

By all written accounts, she was a true terror in battle, toying with her foes as a cat might play with a mouse, stalking and evading while attacking with the great runed scythe that was her trademark weapon. She could blend with the shadows and dust as most Shedren are said to be capable of. The scythe was chained to her armor clad right arm, which was by all accounts, literally pinned to her flesh. She could throw and spin the scythe on its chain as if it were as easy to use as a cattle driver's whip. It was said that wounds inflicted by the awful blade could never heal, and that a victim would bleed out as surely as the sun would rise the next day.

Although petite of frame and stature, with a pixie-like countenance, she possessed incredible strength, nearly matching the historically renowned brute force of the Order of the Titan Knights. These abilities have lead many to believe that she was, in fact, a true demon of some sort, but such exaggerated hyperbolic reputations are not uncommon in the history books.

The records indicate that she vanished after four years and ten months; her last battle was against a remnant of the Titan Knights themselves, a legendary Slavic brute named Sir Crzebolg. she was wounded during the battle, a first amongst all of her recorded matches, but nary a month later the tenuous alliance of warlords collapsed and the gladiatorial arenas were closed and fell to disuse as the entire region boiled over into an all out civil war.

What happened to her after that, or if she ever recuperated from her wounds, is a mystery lost to time, for better or for worse. The Shedren are reluctant to speak of her, and betray a mix of contempt and irritation towards the topic, but do not deny that she was one of their sect."

This started as a livestream sketch that I spent a lot of time trying to polish up in the end. I think the end piece has around 80 layers. Lilit is a somewhat obscure historical figure from the Steamvolt alternate-earth universe I'm slowly developing. I can't say whether she'll ever make an appearance in the comic, or if she's even still alive, but you never know ;)

All work done in Photoshop CS4, on my Fujitsu 5010 tablet PC.

I shall temp you with hints of lesbianism

Holy crap, this took me forever, but it's done! Follow the link to go to the official Steamvolt site. I've decided to host them on their own dedicated site since I'm screwing around with code and CSS on this one so much. I don't want to break something here and kill off the comic.

Enya Beheads Medusa

This is a commission piece I did for a comic writer, AuraComics, on DeviantArt of her Original Character Enya beheading a Medusa. I really went overboard for a regular commission, but it was fun and I got to test out a bunch of new things and stretch my artistic muscles a little bit trying to make everything work.

Decided to go back to hand drawn lettering rather than a digital font. Takes the same amount of effort really, and for some reason all of the feedback I've gotten seems to indicate people like my sloppy handwriting. I don't quite get it, but I'll run with it :)

I'm still on my way to making Steamvolt into a standalone site, but I've got a few roadblocks regarding PHP and my motivation level as far as mangling code goes, so it'll probably have to wait till next year.

Well, didn't feel like sitting on this till Monday, so here's 1.4. Finally getting a little action going :)

Well, a couple weeks and two days late, and this behemoth of a page is finally done. I went WAY overboard with the details on this one. The image swelled to over 600 megs and had 60+ layers to it. It actually made my tablet grunt a little bit working with it, and that's with 4 gigs of DDR3 ram in this thing.

In the end I skimped on some stuff, but I was already way too involved with meaningless details to begin with, so better to get it done and keep moving on than OCD myself into oblivion.

Ok, enough whining, as you can probably see more of the world is starting to come about. I have a weird process of story building that matches the way I game master RPGs, where I rarely have a set idea of exactly what will happen until I get there, I just have a set web of possibilities and keenly developed character motivations and personalities to work with. I have a fairly strong idea of where this is going, and the world is built fairly well, but there's a lot of things that can change in the process. I think I like it that way, to be honest. Feels organic and alive.

A brief intermission to account for OCD, Morons on Facebook, and Annoying my wife

A few things going on. For starters, page 3 is overdue on Steamvolt, because I'm an intense procrastinator. Fortunately, this wasn't due to complete laziness, but from a combination of my neurotic need to finish up the Elf with the guns there, and a bit of a blockage on how to do a certain city-scape panel that's now been resolved.

On other random thoughts that have popped into my head, people who use Facebook or Twitter to spout their fringe political beliefs are, to put it mildly, raging shitheads.

Seriously. Facebook is just the place where a handful of your current friends and a whole lot of people you vaguely knew in high school can keep tabs on stuff in a creepy voyeuristic fashion; getting on your soapbox and linking all sorts of political stuff to acquaintances you haven't talked to in ten or fifteen years is an absolute indicator that you are, in fact, a clueless douchebag. No one wants to read about why you're a Republican/Democrat/Libertarian/Green/Whig/Anarchist/Schmuck. Keep it to yourself, please.

Other exciting things include the fact that this rather well proportioned Elf actually made my wife jealous, which I found odd and frankly god damn funny at the same time. Her exact quote was:

"Those tits look a little too good... what the hell have you been doing? Studying the things?? Who's tits have you been looking at?!?".

to which I replied:

Ok, first, I know my target audience, and second, I'm a rather average frustrated straight male. I've been studying breasts for nearly twenty years now. The only thing shocking about this is that you're shocked by it."

That shut her up, more or less ^___^

Coming Soon: Steam Volt Comic

in

It's bee a while since I tried any comic type stuff, but it's high time I got off my ass and started doing something.

My first comic attempts were the goofy old Fundyville comic I did, which I've buried because, in retrospect, they were awful. Part of it is probably that I've mellowed a bit and I'm not as militantly irritated by religion and supernaturalism. They still piss me off, but there's really not a lot you can do about it, and raging against the retarded system doesn't do much but red line your blood pressure. I also figured out a big part that prevented me from going further with Fundyville was that I felt like a real douchebag every time I was making a page. Nothing is more annoying than a preacher, whether it's about religion (or the lack thereof), politics, or whatever pet topic someone has a hardon over.

Anyway, moving on, I've got some ideas for a comic that I think are cool, and I'm trying to live up to the idea that rather than sit and obsess over whether something sucks or not and trying to perfect everything, just go forward and get stuff done, and don't look back too hard. Looking back to hard leads to awful shit, like Han Solo firing second in those re-released star wars movie abortions that George Lucas screwed up. Don't be like George Lucas.

The comic is going to be called Steam Volt, and it's kind of a combination of Steam Punk, Tesla Punk, and Arcane punk. That feels like too many 'punks' in there, but that's the only way I can really describe it. There's some high fantasy elements in there with a little more tech than is traditional. Should be lots of action and destruction, and I'll put in a little fan service, because I'm ultimately a nerdy guy at heart, and I like explosions and hot comic broads with somewhat impractical and revealing clothing.

The robot there is a sample of the style I'm going for; just another sketch that went further than planned. I've started messing around with texture patterns on some of my recent stuff.

The date that the first page will be out will be June 1st, 2009. I'm aiming for a bi-weekly release schedule to begin with, just because I'm not sure I can make a more aggressive weekly schedule. If things go well, I'll ramp it up a bit. Over the next few weeks I'll have more teaser sketches and start working on some promotional stuff through deviant art and other venues.

Ok, that's enough for now, back to work!
