He started off as a really vicious, long term NPC in a D&D game I ran a few years back. I don't have a problem swiping characters from other settings though :)
I had actually considered adding him in, just because he wound up being so pivotal in the game and he's got a pretty interesting background. It makes me proud when the players are terrified of certain NPC's ^__^
